A lot of careless things are done by drivers on a daily basis while driving. The most common ones we know of are rash driving, dangerous passing, drinking and driving, and using cell phones while driving. Around 1.3 million people are killed each year in road accidents. This is a huge number and is quite alarming.

At Bright Side, we collected few pointers to be kept in mind while in a moving vehicle in order to avoid accidents on the road.

10. Singing along with the car’s radio and driving

Ever find yourself singing along with your favorite song playing on radio station while you’re driving? This is actually a very bad idea, as much as it doesn’t sound like it. If you pay attention, you will find that you usually get too emotional, too excited, or too overwhelmed by music.

For this reason, it’s not advised to sing along, also considering that with high and low notes, you tend to close your eyes. It only takes a millisecond of carelessness while driving to cost you your life.

9. Putting headphones on while driving

Another bad idea is to put earphones or headphones on while driving. You can’t hear people honking behind you and you may not even be able to hear important announcements. There are also a few people who tend to feel sleepy while listening to music through earphones or headphones.

8. Wearing high heels

For all the women who are ready to get all dressed up and drive themselves to a party wearing high heels, it’s advised to keep either a spare pair of flats in the car or to drive barefoot. Heels can get stuck in the floorboard and become the cause for an accident. They can also be uncomfortable while driving.

7. Putting your feet up on the dashboard

If you are also among those who are in the habit of putting your feet up on the dashboard while in the car, you have to read this. An incident that happened recently went viral and made people aware of the dangerous consequences of putting their feet on the dashboard of a car.

During an emergency, if the car gets into an accident, the person sitting in this position will get hurt the most. The explanation for this is that when the airbags get deployed in an accident, the chances are that your feet could fold back toward your face setting the stage for terrible injuries. There is also less control over your body in this position which can make you incapable of preventing this trauma.

6. Sleeping beside the driver

Sitting in the passenger seat and planning on taking a nap? Bad idea! We have all heard of the scientific fact that when you see a person yawning, you tend to yawn yourself too. Juergen Zulley, a sleep researcher and professor of biological psychology at Regensburg University, says snoozing passengers, specifically beside the driver’s seat, can make the driver drowsy too.

So passengers should not only stay awake, but they should also keep checking on the driver to see if he is yawning a lot.

5. Texting or talking on phone while driving

This is a general rule that we should all follow. No calls or texting while driving! This can cause problems because it can deviate the driver’s attention and lead to an accident. A driver must focus on driving at all times and not try to look at their phone.

Even if it’s a handsfree device that you are using, there’s no guarantee that it won’t hamper your concentration on the road. According to studies, excessive phone usage can reduce a driver’s visual scan of the road ahead and result in a slower reaction time.

4. The car should not be your changing room

Some people who are in a hurry often plan on changing their clothes in the car while driving. This is highly dangerous. Imagine yourself with a t-shirt over your head or bending down to put on socks, and then imagine what could happen within that fraction of a second.

Many people also have a habit of keeping spare clothing in their car. It’s advised to either put the windows up or down if you are feeling cold or hot, and adjust the temperature in the car instead of putting on and taking off a clothing.

3. Love for pets

Your love for your pets shows the kindness you have deep inside your heart. But home is the best place to show this, not the car. It is dangerous to allow your pet to sit on your lap while driving. Even if the pet is sitting in the passenger seat, make sure that it is fully trained to not jump around when the car is on the move.

There is a high probability that the presence of a pet in the car can distract you from driving safely. The pet can scratch your face or push you with their leg. Pets are unpredictable and it’s not advised to take them along when driving alone.

2. Driving with your knees or elbows

Sometimes you have breakfast in your hand or a book that you were reading and just can’t put down, even when you’re driving. Using your elbow or knees to drive can be dangerous. It is imperative that you don’t use anything other than your own 2 hands to drive a car and you should keep your hands on the wheel at all times.

1. Reading and driving

As stated above, reading while driving a car can be highly dangerous. While texting is a few seconds of distraction, reading while driving is worse and can put you into deep thought and high levels of concentration about what’s being read. There is nothing wrong with waiting until you reach your destination to start reading again.

It is also believed that motion sickness is related to reading or watching something. This is another reason for you to not read while driving. And if this is not a good enough reason, reading can make you sleepy too.

If you do any of the above things while in a moving car, it’s time you pay attention to the hazards being highlighted here. Do you know of any habits people have that are dangerous while in a moving car? Please share with us in the comment section below.
