Climate change is driving polar bears to near extinction: Photographer Paul Nicklen and filmmakers from Sea Legacy have captured a heartbreaking visual of what this actually looks like.
Filmmakers from Sea Legacy have shared a video and images of the heartbreaking moment when they found a polar bear which was slowly starving to death, while searching for food.
Photographer Paul Nicklen and filmmakers from Sea Legacy came across the bear on the Baffin Islands in Canadian.
The disturbingly graphic images showed the staved bear, with its skin dropping of its bony body, while searching for any sign of scraps to save itself from imminent death.
Nicklen grew up in the far north of Canada so was used to seeing bears, but due to the change in climate his memories were a far cry from this encounter.
Nick told National Geographic “We stood there crying—filming with tears rolling down our cheeks,”
He said they wanted to intervene but was left with a feeling of powerless without a tranquilizer gun or high-fat animal meat.
They instead, decided that capturing the moment on film would be the best way to raise awareness of what is happening to the polar bear and the threat on their species.
“When scientists say bears are going extinct, I want people to realise what it looks like. Bears are going to starve to death,” he said. “This is what a starving bear looks like.”
Polar bears rely mainly on sea ice to hunt for their main source of food – seals, but due to the alarming rate the ice is melting grizzly bears are now competing in their territory.
