Nowadays with healthcare policies being so complicated and dentists treating more patients per office than ever before, it can take up to 3-weeks to get into the dentist’s chair! It doesn’t matter how tough you are. There are those that would consider toothache pain to be on the same level as a gunshot wound or even childbirth! Nobody is going to enjoy waiting 3-weeks for relief…

Thankfully, there are a few quick, natural remedies one can employ to help manage the discomfort of toothache pain. Below we have listed our favorite, effective methods.

One of the most best, natural folk remedies for toothache pain is clove oil. Clove oil contains a powerful alkaloid known as eugenol that works by deadening the nerve cells that are responsible for the pain you feel. However, a word of caution is in order. According to the Arizona Family Dental blog, clove oil can be harmful to a patient’s mucous membranes if used repeatedly over long periods of time. It is also known to “deaden” nerve endings from repeat use. Although, that may not be a bad thing for particularly severe toothaches!

The application of clove oil is a fairly easy procedure. Simply take a cotton swab and dab the oil on the tooth that hurts. Alternatively, you can use a small piece of cotton and douse it with oil. Next, clamp down on the cotton so it arranges itself against the cavity and will seep the oil inside continuously.

However, do exhibit some control to avoid painting the inside of your mouth with clove oil or you will regret being careless. Clove oil has a tendency to “burn” mucous membranes in high dosages. Make certain to wash your hands thoroughly after applying the tincture to avoid contact with your eyes.

Clove oil is probably the most effective natural method of reducing toothache pain. It isn’t perfect, but it should help reduce the sharpest sensations to a dull ache.

Do not dispose of coconut oil in your sink or toilet. The oil will congeal and eventually cause clogs.

Finally, this remedy comes straight from the Author’s Grandma. If your toothache is caused by an exposed nerve that isn’t infected, the best way to treat it is to simply fill the hole with bread! By using bread to form a temporary filling, a person suffering from toothache pain caused by a cracked tooth, lost filling, or similar situation can reduce the pain from a 10 to a 3 in about 90 seconds. It is amazing how quickly this method will work.

Grandma would often douse the bread in a small bit of rye whiskey to add a bit of antiseptic kick.

The trick is to use a very tiny amount so the bread takes on a clay-like consistency. Next, place the clump of “stuffing” on the affected tooth and gently work the bread into the crack or hole. If doused with clove oil or whiskey, you will notice an immediate reduction in pain and within a few minutes, most of the pain will have subsided. The downside to this method is the requirement to repeat the process several times per day.

Ginger Cayenne Paste

This paste helps reduce swelling, alleviate pain, fight off infection, and keep bleeding in check. To make it at home, mix ginger and cayenne in equal amounts along with a little bit of water. Soak a cotton ball in the formula and apply onto the affected tooth. Let it work as long as possible.

Salt Water Gargle

This solution is made of a teaspoon of salt and a cup of boiling water. It combats infection and alleviates throat pain. It also helps ease swelling and flush away debris. Allow to water to cool and swirl it around the mouth for half a minute.

Peppermint Tea

According to a 2013 study, peppermint oil is very effective antiseptic solution against oral pathogens. For optimal results, drink peppermint tea containing a teaspoon of peppermint leaves steeped for 15-20 minutes. This delicious tea will also alleviate bad headache and bad breath, both of which are typical side effects of tooth pain.

Myrrh

“Myrrh’s astringent properties help with inflammation, and a rinse can offer the added benefit of reducing bacteria,” writes RDH. For DIY myrrh rinse, simmer a teaspoon if myrrh in two cups of water. Allow it to cool and use a few times daily.

Raw Garlic

Garlic has the ability to combat fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Its active ingredient called allicin doesn’t respond quite well to health, so it is recommended to use raw garlic when using it for medicinal purposes.

Crush a garlic clove and let it sit for a few minutes to activate its compounds. Combine it with a bit of salt and apply onto the painful tooth. Another option is to chew the clove a few times daily using the affected tooth.

Vanilla Extract

Vanilla works in two separate ways: its scent acts as soothing agent to help fight off anxiety linked to a toothache, and its alcohol content acts as numbing agent. To use it to alleviate a toothache, dab vanilla extract on your finger and rub it onto the affected tooth. Repeat the procedure twice daily.

Turmeric Paste

This paste is packed with antiviral and antibacterial properties, which makes it able to fight bad breath, gum redness, irritation, and tooth stains. Mix a tablespoon of coconut oil, a teaspoon of turmeric powder and a few drops of peppermint oil. Brush your teeth with this paste just like you would do with a regular one. Let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing it off.

Chewing Gum

Losing a filling or breaking a tooth is extremely painful, particularly near the newly exposed area. In order to alleviate the pain, even temporarily, chew a gum on the opposite side of the mouth and apply the chewed gum onto the affected tooth.

Ice

Applying ice or a cold compress on the cheek on the painful tooth helps relieve pain and swelling prior undergoing any conventional treatment.

Acupressure

Simply apply pressure to the hand on the affected side, at the point where the base of the index finger and the thumb meet. Hold for a few minutes to release the pain-relieving endorphins.

Essential Oils

According to a 2014 study, “Essential oil rinses are found to be equally effective in inhibiting plaque. A study carried out by Pizzo et al. on plaque inhibitory effect of amine fluoride/stannous fluoride and essential oils showed no significant difference in efficacy of both. As chlorhexidine causes staining of teeth on long term use, essential oils can be used as an alternative to chlorhexidine rinse. Essential oils have shown to possess antimicrobial activity against subgingival periopathogens, too.”

It is recommended to use oils like cinnamon, clove, tea tree oil, spearmint, peppermint, and myrrh.

By using methods detailed above, you should be able to handle even the most severe toothache pain until you can manage to get yourself to the dentist. A final word of advice, if you cannot afford to go to a regular dentist, try and find a local dental college.
