If you’re anything like me, you have plenty of time for a glass of wine but just no time for a trip to the gym. Well never fear!
New research from the University of Alberta has found that resveratrol, a compound in wine, benefits the body the same way exercise does.
The study, headed up by Jason Dyck, found that red wine can improve life and lifespan for people who cannot exercise. So it’s not exactly intended for us lazy types, but people who simply can’t exercise.
Resveratrol was found to improve heart function and muscle strength, more so than a workout would.

“I think resveratrol could help patient populations who want to exercise but are physically incapable,” Dyck states. “Resveratrol could mimic exercise for them or improve the benefits of the modest amount of exercise that they can do.”
They also found a glass of red wine can potentially slow the aging process and help regulate blood sugar.
Blueberries, peanut butter, red grapes, and dark chocolate also contain resveratrol for those of you who choose not to drink.
Another study from the great University of Denmark also discovered a interesting relationship between waistline and drinking wine: people who drink wine everyday have slimmer waistlines than those who do not!
And, if you needed any more reason to go grab a few bottles of wine, Harvard’s study on weight gain found that out of 20,000 people tested, every single one that gained a significant amount of weight did not drink alcohol!
So, now that you have a bit of science backing you up, don’t get embarrassed by your half-a-bottle-of-wine-every-night habit; it’s something to be celebrated!
