Almost the entire world was shocked when a massive fire engulfed the 850-year-old Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on Tuesday morning (PHL time).
KAMI learned that a Pinoy student who is studying in Paris, France, was able to witness the tragic moment.
In a report by the GMA News (author Anna Felicia Bajo), Franco Maigue said that they were shocked and helpless to see that the one of the best tourist places in the world was burning in front of their eyes.
“Wala kaming magawa eh, feeling helpless to witness this really horrible… one of the most visited places in the world na nasusunog sa harapan mo. Hindi kami makapaniwala,” he said.
“Well nandito lang ako kasama ng mga kaibigan ko galing Pilipinas… the usual selfie galing kaming Notre-Dame… Pagkaraan ng ilang sandali, pagtawid namin ng bridge may nakita kaming maliit na usok,” he added.
“Ang hula namin eh kasi maraming chemicals for renovation. Ang usok kasi ay kulay yellow. Hindi pa namin alam kung bakit,” Maigue said.
As reported by the CNN Philippines (authors Eric Levenson, Melissa Bell and Emanuella Grinberg), the officials said that the fire is now under control.
French President Emmanuel Macron commended the firefighters for saving the façade and twin bell towers, as well as avoiding the “worst” to happen.
“Notre Dame is our history, it’s our literature, it’s our imagery. It’s the place where we live our greatest moments, from wars to pandemics to liberations,” he said.
“This history is ours. And it burns. It burns and I know the sadness so many of our fellow French feel,” the President added.
According to the report by the Washington Post (authors James McAuley, Griff Witte, and Reis Thebault), the officials said that the fire could be related to the on-going construction since the cathedral has been going through a renovation.
No one was reported dead as of posting. However, one firefighter was reported injured.
The Parisians were singing “Ave Maria” outside the cathedral as the burning was happening.
