Depending on what rock you have been living under, you may or may not know that veganism is rapidly taking over the world. In a very short space of time, the numbers of people living purely from plants have risen dramatically. In fact, at present there are estimated to be 7.5 million vegans living in the US alone, making up for 3% of the country’s population.
Of course, this lifestyle choice causes a great deal of debate with those who are proud to call themselves carnivores. Even some vegetarians are perplexed as to how somebody could willingly forfeit everyday products such as milk, eggs, cheese, and even honey.
Yet despite the constant criticisms and concern surrounding veganism, the trend is thriving. So much so, in fact, that there is now a plant-based alternative to practically every food you could think of. No, seriously, it’s true.
If you need proof of that, look no further than this succulent steak which is currently causing controversy online. The incredibly indulgent dish has divided opinion on the internet because – as the chefs behind the juicy delight say – it can “easily fool a carnivore.”
And, it has been doing just that. Thousands of meat eaters have found themselves drooling onto their keyboards as they watch vegan YouTube stars, David and Stephen Flynn take a slice out of the sizzling ‘steak’, before abruptly having to check themselves when they realize that the steak slab is made purely from plants.
That’s right. No animals were harmed in the making of this “meaty”, “smokey” steak.
How is that possible? Watch the video to find out…
David and Stephen, who are more commonly known by their YouTube name, ‘The Happy Pear’, cooked the “spicy” steak for their fellow vegan internet stars, BOSH!, otherwise known as Henry Firth and Ian Theasby.
In the video’s description, they explain:
“‘Vegan’ and ‘steak’ are two words that do not typically go together, but this recipe is seriously delicious. It has a similar taste and texture of steak at the fraction of the cost and is definitely worth trying. This is such an exciting recipe, we encourage you to give this a go, you won’t be disappointed!”
“Try this for the perfect Friday night dinner or to impress your meat-eater friends!” they add.
Meanwhile, during the video, both David and Stephen are practically lost for words as they explain how to cook the plant-based alternative. “Look at that, look at how meaty that is. That is so grisly, so substantial and meaty you could fool any carnivores,” they exclaim as the ‘steak’ sizzles and pops in the pan.
“Super meaty looking, isn’t it?” they ask, as the Henry and Ian come to try the creation. Upon tasting the delicious dish, both Henry and Ian agree that it tastes delicious, whilst still managing to be full of “texture.”
The recipe has alarmed meat eaters, who are conflicted to see one of the most gloriously meaty meals be so convincingly crafted out of pure plants.
It has also raised questions regarding it’s resemblance to a real steak, with many questioning why a vegan would want to eat something that looks so realistically meaty.
Meanwhile, there are those who are considering an alternative lifestyle based solely off of watching this video. Could you be one of those people? I think I could be. Now, I just need to learn how to make a vegan peppercorn sauce!
